The Annual Hanover County Children’s
Festival will take place this year on
Saturday, October 3rd from 10:00
a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Pole Green Park in
Mechanicsville. This is the 5th year Hanover
County Parks and Recreation has presented
this festival and it will be bigger and better than
ever.
Although there are several festivals in
Hanover, including the Strawberry Faire
and the Tomato Festival, this one is planned
especially for children 10 years old and under.
Free and open to the public, events feature
children’s rides, a petting zoo, moonwalks,
the Pamunkey Regional Library’s colorful
Bookmobile and puppet show, games, arts
and crafts, face painting, live entertainment,
demonstrations, interactive displays and more.
There is a very special reason that Pole Green
Park is a favorite location in Hanover. Operation
Hope was established in 2004 by Dana Nelson
and Katie Stilwell, recognizing the need of many
children in our area to have a play area that
they could share with their friends and interact
with other children. Because of varied disabilities
or special needs, Nelson and Stilwell felt some
children were truly missing out. Nelson has MS,
which he acquired as an adult. He felt fortunate
to have a disease free childhood and wanted all
children to have a great play experience.
With money raised by Operation Hope, this
playground was opened in the spring of 2008.
It is fully handicap accessible and provides a
fun atmosphere for those with and without
disabilities to play together. Be sure to stop by
the playground before you leave.
Pole Green Park is located at
8996 Pole Green Park Lane right off Pole
Green Road in Mechanicsville.
