It’s the start of a New Year and with it comes something
that many of us make but few of us rarely keep... New Year’s
resolutions. Whether we resolve to lose weight, make the
outside of our bodies look as young as we feel on the inside, or
simply change the style and color of our hair, it seems like the
start of a New Year makes many of us want to improve something
about ourselves.
We’ve put together our own guide of what trends are expected
to be hot for the New Year. This guide is by no means the complete
guide, since the sky is always the limit, but it gives you some
ideas to mull over. Make sure and check out the listing of local
professionals at the end of the article that can help put the ‘new’
in your New Year!

hair
Colored Extensions:
Extensions add length and bulk to your hair. Bonded extensions
can also be colored without having to color the customer’s real
hair and can last up to seven months. To keep the strands in perfect
shape customers should use a boar bristle brush. Strands
generally cost around $12 each.
Dimensional Hair Color:
Are you looking for more than just highlights or a new haircut to
start off the year? Dimensional Hair Color takes two to three colors
and blends them throughout your hair in sections, with the
back of the head holding the darkest hair color, the crown and
sides with a color approximately one to two levels lighter than
the back and the lightest shade around the hairline and face. All
over foiling will give a different, yet still dimensional effect and
blondes will appear warmer with a softer look. Dimensional color
can involve whatever shades you desire - shades of blondes
with reds, brunettes with reds, reds with brunettes, etc. The possibilities
are endless.
Haircut:
For 2009, stylists say to watch for the short razor cuts, ‘mod’ ‘60s
looks, and choppy layers to be popular styles. In addition, straight
bangs, the classic bob, and the layered bob will be popular, while
the angled ‘bob’ will also reappear. The bob haircut seems to be
continually in style. Maybe that’s because it looks good on every
face shape and is continually reinventing itself. The bob style
that works best for you all depends on your hair’s texture and
length.
Highlights:
Darker color is expected to be in-style this year with more brunette
and auburn styles being seen. Different versions of the
color red are projected to be the popular highlights for 2009 – anywhere from burnt copper to mahogany to violet red are
projected to be hot. Whether you want a little or a lot of red, the
perfect shade is available just for you. Many faithful blondes will
stay that way this year since blonde is always in!
Shine Treatments:
Simply coloring using a transparent glaze that adds body, shine
and flexibility to the hair will be popular this year. Shine Treatment
results generally last up to 10 weeks.

Natural Nail Care:
Many nail salons are now offering clients the ability to achieve
beautiful and healthy nails the natural way. In the past, people
have dealt with embarrassing nail problems by hiding them under
acrylic (or artificial) nails or by covering them up with nail
polish, which over time, can damage the nail bed and ruin the
health of your nails. Instead, with roper diet, skin care and natural
nail care products and services that focus on health and education,
you can have the healthy, beautiful hands and feet you
have always wanted!

Botox, Lip and Wrinkle Fillers and Lip Implants:
Minimally invasive procedures such as Botox and lip and wrinkle
fillers are currently popular cosmetic procedures. These procedures
are performed in the office in a matter of minutes. There is
no recovery for Botox and it is truly a lunchtime procedure. Fillers
are injected to plump lips or fill in wrinkles. The doctor uses
topical anesthetic cream and dental type injections to numb
the patient and then fills the lips or wrinkles. Modern fillers last
about a year and some fillers are permanent. Lip implants are a
permanent option that is attractive to patients that do not desire
filler treatment.
Carita Facial Treatments:
Discover the French Secret to beautiful skin this year. Experience
the Carita Pearl of Youth Facial, which instantly firms and tones
the skin for a more a youthful appearance. At the heart of this
treatment is Le Renovateur, a specialized blend of 3 essential oils
and roasted sunflower seeds that are fermented for one year. Le
Renovateur detoxifies the skin, increases collagen production,
and stimulates cell rejuvenation.
Permanent Make-up:
Permanent eyeliner, eyebrows and lip liner will continue to be
popular in 2009. The amount of time it takes for each procedure
varies depending on the procedure and the customer. The most
popular color in eyeliner is the neutral color black. Experts suggest
staying light in color with the permanent lip liner. That way
if the lipstick color rubs off, it will still appear natural and will not
leave the wearer with a visible outline around the lips.
Spider Vein Removal:
Facial spider veins are very common and come from various
causes including sun damage and aging. Spider veins can be
very fine and cause a generalized facial redness (rosacea) or they
can be bigger and branching. The bigger veins can be red or
blue. Modern lasers allow spider veins to be erased in seconds
with no anesthesia or recovery. Since makeup can be worn immediately
after surgery, many patients will do this procedure at
lunch and return to work.
The Weekend Facelift:
The weekend facelift is for patients with small to moderate aging
who desire a minimally invasive procedure, such as a “quick”
tightening of the jowls and neck, and a short recovery time. It
is also used for older patients that may not be healthy enough
for bigger procedures or for those patients that just cannot take
time away from work. The goal of this procedure is to perform
this surgery on a Thursday and have the patient back at work the
following Tuesday, hence the name. The procedure is done with
IV sedation, no bandages and dissolvable stitches. In addition
the incisions and scars are smaller than conventional facelifts.

Dance Exercise Classes:
Are you looking for an alternative to regular exercise classes? If
so, consider trying one of the newest fitness classes to hit the
Richmond Metro area – dance exercise classes. Designed by
adult dance teachers, the class combines the best of cardio, aerobics,
yoga and Pilates into one class that helps strengthen, balance
and coordinate the participant’s body. It is an excellent way
for a ballroom dancer to grow stronger in their craft. It’s also a
great way to exercise the body and lose weight. Come dressed in
workout clothes and tennis shoes and be prepared to sweat!
Chiropractic Services:
Chiropractic can be defined as conservative care of the body. It
is the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illness without the
use of prescription drugs or invasive surgery. Chiropractic care
uses the most modern clinical techniques such as manipulation
of the spine and other joints, modalities including ultrasound,
electrical stimulation and flexion/distraction, while providing
counseling and patient education for the prevention and treatment
of injury or disease.
XRKade:
A unique workout for the “Generation G” or “Gamers” crowd.
XRKade programming includes specifically designed classes for “tweens”, families, and the over 50 crowd. With XRKade, participants
become a “human joystick” while combining the best of arcade
gaming, entertaining and unique physical challenges with
exercise equipment.

Acupuncture:
Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote
natural healing and to improve functioning by inserting needles
and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture
points. The improved energy and biochemical balance
produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural
healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional
well-being.
Hot Stone Massage:
You may have tried couples’ massages, therapeutic, relaxation,
and even trigger point massages, so why not try a hot stone massage
to loosen you up for the New Year? Heat radiates from special
vulcanized basalt stones, which have been heated in water
up to 120 degrees. Placed on the body, the heat from the stones
helps loosen the muscles, making it easier to knead and massage
the body and relax the mind.
Massage Therapy:
Massage therapy relaxes muscles, eases and soothes bodily
aches and pains, and rejuvenates and restores balance to both
body and being. Swedish Massage offers overall body relaxation,
Deep Tissue Massage loosens stubborn knots, and tied up and
tense muscles, Sports Massage stretches marathon runners and
other athletes, Pre-Natal Massage is available for moms-to-be,
and Reflexology is great for new parents and those who forget
to take care of yourselves.
Pilates:
Unlike many other training programs, Pilates works the whole
body, emphasizing control, precision and concentration in both
the mind and the body. Movements are not performed rapidly or
repeated excessively. Instead, the focus is on quality rather than
quantity. The “powerhouse” (abdominal muscles, lower back and
buttocks), serves as the center of all movement, allowing the rest
of the body to move freely. This focus on core stabilization makes
one stronger from the inside out and is critical for the advancement
of the client.
Yoga:
Yoga unites the mind, body, and spirit. Yoga can also be therapeutic,
providing healing and harmony, while helping you become
more aware of your body’s posture, alignment and patterns of
movement. It makes the body more flexible and helps you relax
even in the midst of a stressful environment. People practice
Yoga to feel more fit, be more energetic, happier and peaceful.
